Dreaming of a White Christmas

“I’ll be home for Christmas,

If only in my dreams.”

I’ve started packing. Little by little.

Remember Level A and Level B? Well, they are becoming one.

As Christmas draws ever nearer I find myself missing my family more and more. By now I suppose many of you have heard the usual tunes of the season playing excessively from every speaker within a 100 mile radius. However, I have only heard those familiar jingles a few times outside of my apartment. I’m also quite certain that you have set up your trees, decorated your houses, and been frantically shopping for last minute items. Meanwhile, I have been scrambling to get plane tickets and reserve accomodations.

Where am I going? Harbin (哈尔滨).

I will be spending Christmas in the far northern reaches of China at the world’s largest snow and ice festival. It sounds really impressive when you type it outloud.

As a child I always hoped it would snow on Christmas. It took things to a whole new level. Snow is magical in a way which cannot be recreated, no matter how old you are. That being said, I’ll certainly be getting plenty of snow on this trip. However, I’m beginning to think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew considering Harbin boasts a chilly average of -13℉ in January. I’m just going to play it safe and assume that it is the same for December.

Hopefully, it doesn’t bite too much off of me…haha like frostbite. See what happened there?

*ahem*

On that note, I’m off to find some last minute items that may help with body heat retention! I leave tomorrow so of course there will be pictures to come soon.

Until next time!

  1. While it is completely understandable that you miss your family (I mean who wouldn’t…maybe Hitler…but even then, I think he liked his mom…) be sure to remain present. It’s always easy to withdraw into one’s mind and miss out on the memories happening right now. 😉
